Why is the role so important?
This role is vital to the success of a magazine as the visuals are such a big aspect of drawing a reader in. Especially on the front cover as that is the first thing that the potential reader would see so it must be as appealing as possible.
What are they responsible for?
They are responsible for coming up with the ideas for design and illustration also a team of artists.
Who provides the photography and illustrations?
Freelancers and external agencies.

Photographers, Freelancers, Libraries and PR companies
What should photos used in a magazine illustrate to the reader?
This may emphasise any emotional impact that emerges from a story, or allow the reader to identify with any people in it. Also it should quickly tell the reader what the article is about.

Some good explanations Jack however it's clear that some of this is copied straight from the book. It MUST be in your own words. Also you need to reference the book. Good moodboard and analysis of photos. Make sure you use some of these ideas in your own shots and you follow the rule of thirds.
